Time Sensitive: Extend or File by April 15th
IRS deadline this Wed
If you are an American taxpayer (green-card holder or citizen), are a non-American with American sourced income and tax, or a non-American with an American entity even if no tax owed, April 15th is the deadline to file and pay your taxes.
If you need more time to file, request an extension by April 15th, which will give you until October 15th to file. Payment of any tax owed is still due by April 15th, or if paid after the deadline, subject to penalties and interest.
This deadline covers the most common forms:
-1040
-1040-NR (non-resident)
-5472 + pro forma 1120
Remember that if you have US income you also need to pay your Q1 2026 quarterly estimated payment by April 15th.
Note: if you are a US citizen or green-card holder and living abroad, you usually get an automatic 2 month extension on FILING (not payment) without having to file an extension

Three ways to extend:
1- Make a payment to the IRS (even small one like $1)
2- Efile (free for US persons, depending on software can find free for non-residents)
3- Print and mail paper form to IRS
